Two suspects who allegedly pretended to be first-year students at Maasai Mara University have been detained and handed over to police following a series of thefts on campus, university security officials told this newsroom.

According to campus security, the two individuals lived among students and presented themselves as newcomers in order to blend in and gain access to student hostels and common areas. Over several weeks, numerous students reported missing items. The similarity in timing and the types of items taken prompted security personnel to investigate and eventually detain the suspects.

The suspects are currently in police custody pending further inquiries and possible formal charges. University security said the arrests followed coordinated complaints from affected students and a review of movements around the affected hostels.

Campus leaders urged students to take precautions, including locking rooms, keeping valuables out of sight, and immediately reporting unfamiliar persons or suspicious activity to the security office. University officials also said they will review guest-vetting and access procedures to reduce the risk of non-students living or moving freely on campus in future.

As of 18 September 2025 this newsroom had not located an official public statement from Maasai Mara University or Narok police confirming the arrests; efforts to obtain comments were ongoing.
