Kenya to Continue Presence in Haiti Mission Amid Domestic Opposition, Says Foreign Affairs PS

Kenya’s government has confirmed it will continue its participation in the stabilisation mission in Haiti, despite criticism from some local quarters. The announcement was made by Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei in response to questions about Kenya’s ongoing role.

Sing’oei affirmed that Kenya would work alongside the United States and other partner countries to support the Haitian National Police (HNP) and the newly formed Gang Suppression Force (GSF). The partnership is aimed at restoring security and governance in parts of Haiti plagued by gang violence.

Although the previous Kenya-led mission’s mandate expired on October 2, Sing’oei stressed that Kenya’s commitment to peace and regional stability extends beyond timelines, maintaining that the mission aligns with the country’s foreign policy objectives.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions domestically. While some national leaders and civil society groups argue that Kenya should prioritize its internal challenges, others support the move as a demonstration of Kenya’s influence and reputation on the global stage.
