THE RISE OF E-MOBILITY IN KENYA:ELECTRIC MOTORBIKES

Kenya is experiencing a transport revolution with the rise of electric motorbikes. In 2025, boda boda riders and delivery companies are increasingly shifting to eco-friendly alternatives.

The biggest reason is cost efficiency. Electric bikes save up to 40% on fuel costs compared to petrol motorbikes. For boda boda riders who depend on daily income, this makes a huge difference.

Second, environmental benefits are driving the trend. With Nairobi struggling with air pollution, electric bikes produce zero emissions, making them climate-friendly.

Third, government and private investors are supporting e-mobility. Charging stations are being built across Nairobi and Kisumu, making it easier for riders to recharge quickly.

Companies like Roam (formerly Opibus) and Ampersand are already assembling electric bikes locally, creating jobs and lowering costs.

Apart from boda bodas, delivery companies such as Glovo and Jumia are also testing e-bikes for cost reduction.

By 2030, electric mobility is expected to dominate Kenya’s transport sector. For youth, this presents new opportunities in battery assembly, charging infrastructure, and green jobs.

The rise of e-mobility is not just a trend — it’s the future of Kenyan transport.
