CNN International correspondent Larry Madowo is leading an investigation into alleged killings during Tanzania’s recent election unrest. In a social media post on November 6, 2025, Madowo appealed to Tanzanians for help in gathering evidence. “Tanzanians, I need your help,” he said. “We’re a special CNN report about what happened during and after the elections.”

Madowo requested original videos or photos showing the violence, explaining that many local journalists were restricted from reporting freely. “Many people have died, but many journalists in Tanzania haven’t been allowed to tell the truth,” he said. “Please send me videos if you recorded what happened yourself, and ensure it’s not footage shared by someone else.”
The goal of the investigation is to collect verifiable evidence to help the world understand what transpired. “Help us investigate what really happened so we can tell the world,” Madowo added.
This appeal comes amid growing international concern over reports of violence following Tanzania’s elections. The main opposition party, Chadema, claims over 700 people were killed in protests across various areas, while the United Nations confirmed 10 deaths and urged security forces to avoid excessive force. The unrest began after opposition leaders were barred from contesting key seats, leading to widespread protests and police crackdowns.
