He started as a business man, winning tender bids involving large sums of money before venturing into politics. Kenyans saw his selection as a running mate by President William Ruto, this act generated questions in the minds of concerned Kenyans which necessitated checking his reputation.
This drove me back where l had to dig his background historically. Mr. Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua was born on 28th day February 1965 in Hiriga Village Mathira constituency in Nyeri County. He joined Kabiruini primary and schooled for 8 years between 1971-1977. Later joined Kianyaga High School where he finished his O- level and A- level. Furthermore, he proceeded to the University of Nairobi as a political science student trainee. In addition, he also attended a paramilitary training at the administration police institute in 1990 after graduating from the University of Nairobi.
His political career actively in 2017, when he vied for the Member of Parliament seat Mathira constituency on Jubilee Party ticket and won. Upon joining legislature, he gathered courage by making direct addresses on public matters which projected his political vehicle forward. In 2022, Rigathi got selected by President William Ruto as a running mate, the two won elections with over 50% Majority. He became the Deputy President on 13th September 2022.
However, two years later after assuming office wrangles began and accusations was laid on him. In response, Rigathi himself became bold enough to condemn acts of abductions and extra-judicial killings during July 2024 protest through press conference. He never anticipated his impeachment was cooking vigorously.
His impeachment was tabled before the Senate on 16th October on the grounds of 16 charges as seconded by 282 MPs. Eventually, after hearing the presentations and responses given the senate through facilitated electoral voting, Rigathi Gachagua the second Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya was impeached. The constitution (Article 95, section 5) dictates on impeachment quorum of 2/3. The impeached victim won’t hold a public office after impeachment as per the dictates of the constitution. Former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua went to court to challenge the impeachment decision by the senate where a decision has not been made yet. Despite, impeachment he has been holding rallies within and outside the country making statements and also claiming to vie for presidency. The question remains will he run for presidency before being exonerated ? If yes, how and why? Rigathi breaking up political engagement with President Ruto is not new in the face Kenyan politics, it began way before adoption of the new constitution. Question is who’s to blame in this wrangles and uncertainties??
I rest my case, God bless Kenya .
