Gachagua No-Show at Raila’s State Funeral Raises Eyebrows
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was notably absent at the State funeral of the late opposition leader Raila Amollo Odinga held on Friday at Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi, sparking speculation and public debate over his no-show at the high-profile event.
The funeral, which was attended by President William Ruto, First Lady Rachel Ruto, former presidents Uhuru Kenyatta and Mwai Kibaki’s family representatives, regional heads of state, and foreign dignitaries, marked the final farewell to one of Kenya’s most influential political figures. Raila, who passed away in India after a short illness, was honored with full State recognition, with thousands of mourners in attendance.
Despite the presence of nearly the entire Cabinet, top opposition figures, and international guests, the Deputy President’s seat remained conspicuously empty. No official explanation was immediately given by his office regarding his absence, though insiders cited “unavoidable official engagements.”
Political analysts have, however, noted that Gachagua’s absence may reignite talk of growing political rifts within the Kenya Kwanza administration. The Deputy President has in recent months maintained a low profile amid reports of strained relations with President Ruto and divisions within the ruling coalition.
President Ruto, in his eulogy, praised Raila as “a towering statesman whose contribution to Kenya’s democracy and unity will forever be remembered.” The event was characterized by emotional tributes, gospel performances, and military honors, as Raila’s casket was draped in the national flag.
Raila Odinga’s body will be laid to rest at his home in Bondo, Siaya County, over the weekend, in a private family ceremony following the State funeral.
Meanwhile, the Deputy President’s office has yet to issue a statement clarifying the reason for his absence, even as Kenyans continue to share mixed reactions on social media — some citing political tension, others calling for respect and unity during the mourning period.
