A tragic accident early Friday morning claimed the life of a young pupil in Mihang’o, Chokaa area of Nairobi. At approximately 6:50 a.m. on September 12, a school bus transporting learners lost control along the Chokaa–Mihang’o SDA stretch. According to eyewitnesses, the bus’s brakes failed, and the driver tried to steer to avoid a worse outcome but swerved back onto the road and hit a pupil who was waiting for his sibling. The learner, from Stelurm Elite School, was struck against a wall and later pronounced dead at the scene. Several other learners sustained serious injuries.
A security officer at the nearby gate – speaking on condition of anonymity – said the bus appeared poorly maintained: “The axles were weak, brakes weren’t responding, tyres looked worn. The driver was battling to stop but had no choice,” he said. He added that he attempted to alert school management earlier about the bus’s condition but felt the warning went unheard.
