W.H.O FLAGS REGIONAL RISK, AS 42 SUCCUMBS IN DRC

Since early September 2025, an Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in Kasai Province, DRC—centred in the Bulape Health Zone—has resulted in 64 total reported cases (53 confirmed and 11 probable), of which 42 deaths (31 among confirmed cases, 11 probable) have been recorded.

The case-fatality ratio (CFR) is approximately 65.6%, and five healthcare workers are among the confirmed cases, including three fatalities.

The outbreak is geographically limited so far to six health areas in Bulape Health Zone. Age distribution of the cases ranges from newborns (0 years) to 65, with children aged 0-9 years and adults aged 20-29 among the more heavily affected cohorts. Women make up about 57-60% of cases; they account for over half of the deaths.

Efforts to contain the outbreak are under way. Vaccination using ring vaccination strategy has begun, with more than 2,000 people vaccinated by one report, and further doses are being shipped. Surveillance, contact tracing, early case detection, isolation, and community risk communication are also being conducted.

The World Health Organization assesses the risk of further spread as high at the national level but moderate regionally, due in part to population movement, challenges of accessing remote areas, weak health infrastructure, unsafe burial practices, and delayed detection.
