Public University Lecturers, Staff Vow to Prolong Strike Until KSh 7.9B Demand is Met
Public university lecturers and staffers have vowed to continue with their nationwide strike until the government honors their demand of KSh 7.9 billion in pending payments. Addressing the media on Wednesday evening, officials from the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) Dr. Constantine Wasonga and the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) Dr.Charles Mukwaya reiterated that their members would not resume work until the outstanding funds are released in full. The union leaders accused the government of failing to honor a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed earlier, which promised salary arrears and benefits to lecturers and non-teaching staff across public universities. UASU Secretary General emphasized that the industrial action was not meant to sabotage learning but to compel the government to respect agreements and safeguard the welfare of academic and non-academic staff. His KUSU counterpart Dr. Charles Mukhwaya echoed the sentiments, noting that the prolonged standoff risks paralyzing academic calendars, including examinations and admissions, if not urgently addressed. The unions called on the Ministry of Education and the National Treasury to intervene immediately, warning that the strike will persist until the KSh 7.9 billion demand is settled without delay.
